She will make her presentation, The 2017 Doomsday Clock: Why the Time Matters. The Doomsday Clock, first introduced by the Bulletin 70 years ago, is an iconic graphic that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making.

Human Trafficking Here and Elsewhere

The Department of Homeland Security defines human trafficking as "modern day slavery (that) involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex." It is considered to be the third-largest criminal activity in the world, behind drugs and arms trafficking, and is estimated to be a $32 billion industry. A panel of experts will discuss the scope of the problem and ways to address the issues and work towards solutions.

Water Quality and Quantity: Visions for Our Streams and Rivers

The Chicago area is home to three important rivers - the Chicago, Calumet and Des Plaines. Experts will present ideas on how to make them cleaner, more accessible to the public and sustainable. Kara Riggio, Manager, Metropolitan Planning Council Three Rivers Project, and Patricia Werner, Planning Supervisor for Lake County Stormwater Management Commission will examine how to balance choices such as flooding or fishing; polluting or paddling; run off or land restoration and ideas for public/private land and water collaboration.

We can celebrate the decision of 196 governments at the U.N. conference in Paris to work together by taking collaborative actions here at home to control flooding, drought, polluted aquifers and waste management while improving the quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.

Ralph Martire: The Fiscal Crisis in Illinois: Its Cause and Potential Solution

Ralph Martire, Executive Director of the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, will examine Illinois' deepening fiscal crisis, what factors led to it and some possible solutions. He teaches a Master's Class on Education Finance and Fiscal Policy at the University of Illinois and at Roosevelt University where he is also a distinguished lecturer on public policy. His areas of expertise include tax policy, pension reform and school funding. He has taught fiscal policy seminars for a number of other universities and the International Fulbright Scholar Program.

Investing in Our Future: The Case for Early Childhood Education

Children are born with the same potential to become successful learners. Beginning at one year of age, however, significant deficits begin to show in children from high-risk environments. Research shows there is no single investment that can break the cycle of poverty more effectively than a high-quality early childhood education. Children who have access to high-quality early childhood education are academically and socially more successful in school. Nancy Ronquillo, President and CEO of Children's Home and Aid Society, David Lloyd, Director of Fiscal Policy, at Voices for Illinois Children, and a parent of a child receiving services at the Jerri Hoffman Child and Family Center in Carpentersville, Illinois will lead the discussion. The panel will be introduced by former State Representative Kathleen Ryg.
